Godolphin’s multiple graded stakes winner Avery Island (Street Sense) has been sidelined and will be shipped to Lexington Tuesday to be further evaluated by Dr. Larry Bramlage at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, Godolphin announced Monday. The colt came back lame after working Friday, but initial x-rays ruled out any structural damage.
“It’s very disappointing for all of us here at Godolphin, and plans are on hold until we know more about the injury,” trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said. “He’s done something to himself. But we will wait until we hear from Dr. Bramlage before deciding the next move.”
A second-out winner last September at Belmont, the bay colt went on to dominate the GII Nashua S. Nov. 5 at Aqueduct, and after running second as the favorite in the GII Remsen S., bounced back with a victory in the GIII Withers S. Feb. 3.

Al Shaqab Racing has announced the death of their Group 1 winning young stallion The Wow Signal (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}). The 6-year-old had been battling laminitis for a number of months. The Wow Signal shot to prominence when winning the G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot for trainer John Quinn having been purchased by the trainer’s son Sean for £50,000 from Eddie O’Leary’s Lynn Lodge Stud at the Ascot Breeze Up Sale in 2014. He confirmed his class when beating Hootenanny (Quality Road) in the G1 Darley Prix Morny at Deauville on his next start, a performance which saw him crowned the champion 2-year-old in France that year. He never made it to the track as a 3-year-old and was retired to stud at Haras de Bouquetot in 2016. However he suffered from poor fertility resulting in two small crops of foals with just eight yearlings on the ground this year to represent him in the future. The Wow Signal’s pedigree made headlines late last year when his dam Muravka (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}) was sold to Barronstown Stud for €950,000 at the Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale.

Ruis Racing’s BOLT D’ORO (c, 3, Medaglia d’Oro–Globe Trot, by A.P. Indy) was awarded Saturday’s GII San Felipe S. after a lengthy inquiry by the stewards determined that ‘TDN Rising Star’ McKinzie (Street Sense), narrowly first past the post, caused enough interference in the dying strides to affect the outcome of the race. Allowed to box seat the race after leaving from the one hole, the $630,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga graduate bided his time just behind the leaders before popping away from the fence to go on the attack three wide nearing the lane. Fractionally in front off the home corner, he dueled grimly outside of McKinzie after the two exchanged bumps in upper stretch and fought on bravely to the line, but just missed. Head-on replays showed that the even-money favorite came out slightly on Bolt d’Oro in the final 40 yards and, in the eyes of the stewards, was enough to reverse placings. Winner of last year’s GI Del Mar Futurity and GI FrontRunner S., Bolt d’Oro endured a horrific trip as the 7-10 chalk in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and it can be argued that he did well to be third while covering significantly more ground than the victorious Good Magic (Curlin). Bolt d’Oro was to have his seasonal debut in the GII San Vicente S., won impressively by Kanthaka (Jimmy Creed), but had that return delayed by a muscle pull. Lifetime Record: 5-4-0-1. O-Ruis Racing. A field of 12 of South America’s top dirt horses representing Brazil, Peru and host country Uruguay is set to head to the post for Sunday’s G1 Longines Gran Premio Latinoamericano at Maronas Racetrack in Montevideo.
Last year’s race, conducted over 12 grassy furlongs at the Valparaiso Sporting Club in Chile, was won by then 3-year-old Sixties Song (Arg) (Sixties Icon {GB}) and sophomores look to figure prominently this time around as well.
Local hopes rest on Fitzgerald (Brz) (Put It Back), who will try to become the first Uruguyan-based winner of the Latinoamericano since Good Report (Arg) (Ride the Rails) carried Jorge Ricardo to victory at La Plata in 2007. Winner of four of his six starts at Maronas, he exits a five-length victory against his elders in Group 3 company over course-and-distance Feb. 3 (video).
Argentina is represented by Roman Rosso (Arg) (Roman Ruler), who has won four times from his last five outings, including open-lengths victories in the G1 GP Provincia de Buenos Aires at La Plata last October and in the G1 Nacional at Palermo (video) when last seen in mid-November.
Peru accounts for a third of Sunday’s runners, including El Entrerriano (Per), a 3-year-old son of 2009 Breeders’ Cup Marathon winner Man of Iron (Giant’s Causeway–Better Than Honour). Runner-up to the impressive Golden Leaf (Arg) (Stay Thirsty) in the G1 Derby Nacional at Monterrico in November, he was most recently the easy winner of a Group 3 at home going Sunday’s 10-furlong trip Feb. 11, with Barbon (Per) (Badge of Silver) and Dixie Wave (Arg) (Stormy Atlantic) second and third, respectively (video).
